When you search bulk coins, what do you do with the exchangeable coins (e.g. Euros, British pounds, Swiss Francs)? Do you hold on to them for a possible future trip, or do you exchange them to redeem its face value?

I hear every coin you jingle!

For me it depends on their face value and the frequency of encountering them which can depend on how much it was picked through previously.

Yes, I hold on to them if I have a holiday planned in the future or in the case with Euros and UK current and exchangeable (Shilling and up) coins and notes I always keep them. A month or two ago I exchanged about £60-£70 in Austrian Schillings, £20 in US and Canadian coinage, £5 in Moroccan dirhams, and £20 in UAE Dirhams. Luckily for me I'm at university which has a high amount of Eastern European students, thus I've got like £40 in Polish Zloty, £5 in Romanian Lei and about £10 in Bulgarian Lev (I managed to shift £120 in current notes before the Euro adoption so its just coins and outmoded notes) so I can just give them the notes for UK money in exchange. While the rest goes to leftover currency.

Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.

What is the exchange rate of Austrian shillings to  euro / pound?

This is a better source as it shows the rates for all national currencies now within the Eurozone.

As someone who has done this for years and goes to the countries themselves, if you can get the exchangeable coins in bulk for at least 65% of the exchange value on popular countries (euro, Canada, CH, etc) then hold onto it and trade it for other countries/coins you might want. If you are going on a trip to Japan for example and have someone who is willing to give you yen for francs, then you will have essentially given your trip a huge discount! Just a few months ago I had exchanged some 800 CAD in coins that I had accumulated for pesos and Swiss francs, and now I have another 400 ready to trade again. Since I do this a lot, I have a mental note of what coins are worth picking out and leaving, which are redeemable and have no value; if I am unsure, I multiply the weight of the coin per pound with the price per pound, and compare with the exchange value. Getting exchange coins might encourage you to visit countries you would not have considered before; I do not think I would have prioritized visiting Croatia before had I not accumulated all the kuna before the deadline. It is a fun way to recycle money with no collector value that otherwise would have been sitting in a box or bucket forever.
