I have just made a modification request for South Africa KM#4, the Z.A.R. Silver Sixpence, and noticed the date range for the South Africa Pound is given as 1825 to 1961. Firstly, the end date should be changed to 1960 since that is when the last Elzabeth II sterling issues were minted before the first decimal Rand issues were launched in 1961. But more confusing is where the 1825 date came from (unless someone was looking at the birthdate of Paul Kruger?!) because as far as I am aware, there was no South Africa coinage produced in 1825.

OK, just had a look on Wikipedia and it appears that, "The pound sterling became the standard currency of the Cape of Good Hope colony in 1825 following an imperial order-in-council that was issued for the purpose of introducing the sterling coinage into all the British colonies". However, I think that just means that, since Great Britain captured the Cape colony in 1795, and again in 1806 and received permanent title in 1814, they were just trying to get rid of the previous Dutch coinage and introduce the British Pound as the standard currency.

Surely the dates we are interested in are the dates that the relevant coinage was produced which, in the case of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek, is 1874 when the first Gold Burgers Pond was minted. The other option would be 1892 when the first commonly circulating currency was issued in denominations ranging from 1 Penny to 1 Pond (Pound) but I think the preferred option would be to stick with 1874, since that is when the first coin was struck.

Please could someone from the team look into this and either change accordingly or perhaps let us know here why the date of 1825 has been used. Many thanks, Rick

You're right.

But I can't do anything. Only the webmaster (you know his name, right?) can make the changes. Thing is though, he's wound up with a ton of work and I asked him to give me permission to edit currencies which would really be beneficial to all of you guys cause I get a lot of messages regarding currency errors and I see many errors myself. We'll just have to wait.

OK, SmartOneKg, thanks for your reply (and if it was yourself that validated the modification requests - thanks again!) I can understand that "he who shall remain nameless" must be quite busy right now - we'll just have to wait, like you said.

I don't want to wait though.

If I am able to edit currencies though, the Pound will be first on my list to edit.
