Hello,

I found a 10 cents coin from East Africa from 1943. The problem is that it doesn't have a mint mark. In the catalog I found that coins from 1943 have the SA(Pretoria, South Africa) as a mint mark. Is this coin a fake or am i missing something? Below i have attached the photos.

Thanks in advance!

The catalog says that this coin with no mint mark indicates the Royal Mint, London, England.

It is true, but look for example at year 1942. It has one category with mint letter (i.e. I) and 2 categories without it. Shouldn't be the same for 1943?
I guess the entry "1943 SA" only means, that the coins of this year were struck in SA, but not that these coins have a SA-mint mark, too. Probably there is only a mint mark in these years when two mints struck coins in order to differ their origin (all other years than 1943 and 1945).

Leitwolf, I beg to disagree. "1943 SA" should only be used as such if there is an actual SA mint mark, not to indicate that the year struck was in South Africa but without mint mark. Instead, to indicate the place of striking of a single year without a mint mark, a comment would be used. I have a comment at my copy of this coin that the mint mark has been worn away but I have not checked it to see if any trace remains.

The notes In the catalog page have errors, it says the mint mark is under the N in cents, but the SA is actually under the hole above the date, as seen on the coin on the page, so more work is needed on this page.

Krauss agrees there were only SA minted 10c in 1943.

edit to add, your photo is not focused well enough to see, but the SA is really small, I think it is there.
look at this one, its really tiny, very close to the tusks

You're right, Mr. Midnight. Very accurate observation!

cristii007: Look at the pictures of the Numista coin sheet. They show a 1943 coin. And the reverse picture is good enough to see the little "SA" above the tusks.
