A picture tells much more than a description, so here are the pictures of a small "2" (upper picture) and a large "2" (lower picture) on the South Africa 20 cents 1962 (https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces2896.html), although the difference is better to spot when you look at the difference in space between the "9" and "6":

Edit: change request already validated. Thank you very much Pcoetzee5.
I'd say that these are two absolutely different styles of engraving the year "1 9 6 2" .
Interesting what SA catalogs say about it .
Thanks for sharing !

Brian Hern's South African Coins and Patterns lists 2 styles of date for the 1961-1964 20 Cent, and describes the 1962 date style as "Date numerals longer and thinner." It does not list both varieties for the date, so I would say you have made a discovery.
It's not a discovery: the two varieties are in Krause and in the Numista catalogue, listed as "small 2" and "large 2". But it's not only the "2", "small date" and "large date" would be a better description.
Krause only mentions the 1962 with two varieties. Does Brian Hern's South African Coins and Patterns mention another year for the 1961-1964 20 cents with two varieties?

The way I read it, Hern lists the longer, thinner numerals as a variety for '62, suggesting that the wider date numerals are the regular strike:
As you can see, the only other variety mention is the double-struck '61. Might I suggest that you submit a modification request and use this thread as your source? I have done a lot of work with the SA referee and have found him very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly.
Just because you can't see it ... doesn't mean it isn't there - Anon.
