My almost forgotten coins

Hello all,

I’ve had a coin collection for many years, but it’s not until now I’ve started to take it more seriously, organising and cataloguing it all. I’ve never actually bought any coins for my collection, as 90% of my coins was given to me by my English grandfather around 20 years ago, and as he was in the military and stationed all over the world, there’s a lot of different stuff. The rest is circulation coins received in change and from when I’ve been on holiday.

My main interest is – naturally enough – Danish and British coins, and when I’d put most of those in coin holders and albums, I remembered I’d put a handful of coins in a box, because they were way older than the others, or I couldn’t immediately tell what they were.

I have absolutely zero experience in grading coins, so I won’t bother with that. Instead I thought I’d ask some of the more knowledgeable people on this forum about possible valuations of these.

In the first image, the top one I guess is an 1817 one shilling like this:

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces8476.html

More than 23 million minted, so probably not very valuable.

The next two look like 1816 and 1820 6 pences like this:

The third one in that row is a bit more worn, but I think it might be an 1824 6 pence:

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces13186.html

Only 634,000 minted, but probably not worth a lot in its current state anyway. As far as I can tell, it is normal that the shield on the reverse is ‘upside down’.

Next one is an 1898 5 Pfennig, I think of the ‘small shield’ type:

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces1916.html

It’s very worn, so I haven’t been able to make out the mint letter.

The next one I guess is a 1971 ½ penny of Guernsey – looks pretty common, so not a lot more to say about that:

I’d never heard of a baiocco before, so I thought the 1851 ½ baiocco was pretty interesting. It has a Numista rarity index of 70, but still 4 million+ of this variant has been minted:

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces8324.html

The shield on the reverse is also upside down on this one, couldn’t find anything about that, but probably like it should be.

I think the next one is an 1854 farthing, so must be this one:

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces5501.html

A couple of farthings from 1861 and 1873 coming up, looks pretty common:

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces5500.html

The next one is the oldest coin I have, as it says 1720 on it. I haven’t been able to find the exact one in the Numista catalogue, but except for the fact that it says 1720, it looks like this one:

http://colnect.com/en/coins/coin/25888-%C2%BD_Penny-PD03_-_The_Halfpenny_%C2%BD_Penny-United_Kingdom_of_Great_Britain_Northern_Ireland

The diameter of 26mm fits.

The one from 1771 should be this one:

The half pennies from 1875 and 1891 look pretty common as well:

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces4575.html

As does the one penny from 1873:

But at least they’re in good enough condition to get into my collection. I have a handful of other pennies/half pennies from the 1700's and 1800’s but they’re so worn that most of the time only the year is visible.

I apologise for the length of my first post on this forum, but hopefully some of you read it anyway :)
Welcome to the site and don't apologise for your post. It is a refreshing post.

I am afraid to say that value is greatly effected by condition. The coins that are silver are genuinely great coins but nothing really above scrap value. The low mintage 6 pence in VG will probably command a little premium but nothing amazing.

The farthings are quite nice and in general your coins have historical value.

Again, welcome to the site and ask as many questions as you like.
Thank you for your reply, which was pretty much as I expected. I collect coins for fun, not value anyway, and just the fact that I own some coins that are more than 200 years old is cool to me.

They'll certainly go into my collection, and next week I'm expecting a package of Danish coins I was missing which will be the first I've actually bought. I'm just happy to be adding to it! :)
