Cross of Katanga - Is it really a coin?

I've seen it before and I really must ask; Is the Cross of Katanga really a coin?

No denomination, no date, no inscription. Could it really be classified as a coin, or is it just a symbol for the civilization of the Katangan people?

I suppose it comes down to what is a coin. But also, if the cross of Katanga had a known value...then it is a coin.

It seems like it had its own value though. (I just Googled it and found an Wikipedia article. Apparently a Katanga cross would buy about 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of flour, five or six chickens or six axes, or five chickens and one axe. Two would buy a gun).  

So, I guess it is a "coin", or at least some kind of payment.

Except that at least the Chinese knife money have some inscriptions on them. The Katangan cross is all clean.
