Cette monnaie, frappée à partir de 1672 pour une valeur de trois livres tournois, apparaît d’abord dans les ateliers parisiens avant d’être progressivement produite dans d’autres villes du royaume, comme Bayonne. Elle se distingue nettement des émissions traditionnelles de Louis XIV : le souverain n’y est plus représenté à l’antique, mais vêtu selon la mode de son époque. On y voit notamment un buste drapé accompagné du collier de l’ordre du Saint-Esprit, ainsi qu’une moustache, une cuirasse du XVIIe siècle, une grande perruque et surtout une élégante cravate ornée. Ce dernier détail a donné son nom à cette pièce, parfois aussi appelée « écu du Parlement », en référence au jabot de dentelle porté par les magistrats parisiens.
This coin, first struck in 1672 with a value of three livres tournois, was initially produced in Paris before gradually being minted in other cities across the kingdom, including Bayonne. It stands out clearly from the traditional depictions of Louis XIV: instead of being portrayed in the classical antique style, the king appears dressed according to the fashion of his own time. The portrait shows a draped bust adorned with the collar of the Order of the Holy Spirit, along with a moustache, a seventeenth-century cuirass, an imposing wig, and above all an ornate cravat. This distinctive feature ultimately gave the coin its name, though it is sometimes also referred to as the “Parliament ecu,” a reference to the lace jabot worn by magistrates of the Parliament of Paris.
