Hello everyone,
I own a 2019 Romania 500 Lei gold proof coin issued for the Apostolic Journey of Pope Francis to Romania.
Specifications:

  • 1 oz gold (.999)
  • Proof quality
  • Mintage: 500 pieces
  • Complete original box and certificate

I am trying to estimate its current market value and whether grading through NGC/PCGS would be worthwhile before selling.
Any opinions or previous auction references would be greatly appreciated.

Naturally, the value is very directly related to the gold price. There could be up to about 5% premium based on the lower mintage and the interest in Roman Catholic (+ Romania) material of a potential buyer. That kind of buyer probably does not desire or care about the slab, the coin is in a capsule, nor the fact that it's a 69/70 grade. Additionally, it separates the coin from the presentation box, which may appeal to many people for such a coin. Sadly, this type of material is what is ending up in the melting pot. It's bullion in a handsome and different form, which some gold hoarders appreciate.

Moneta

Modern “made for collectors” stuff usually carries little to no premium, especially if made out of expensive material like gold and/or from obscure places or depicting designs only interesting to a fringe audience. This is true the longer they are on the market, usually sold for a high price at the beginning and resold at a loss at each further sale [I try to be the 3rd or 4th buyer for my modern NCLT coins from Japan were I can often acquire them for a third or fifth of the original sales price].

They are also often artificially scarce with low mintages but “rarity” in isolation doesn't warrant a higher value.
