Hello, forgive my ignorance but I have a very vague memory of finding this coin (marked in the Numista database as a non-circulating coin, available in sets only) in circulation in San Marino in 1990s. Could this have happened?

Yes of course it can happen. Anyone can dismantle a set and release it into circulation especially if it has the same dimensions as regular coinage.

Thank you for the quick reply. I assume, the sets were available in the bank at face value of the coins?

Most likely directly from the mint at a premium.

I don't think it's too common but I have numerous San Marino coins that are listed as “in sets only” but look like they may have very lightly circulated.  I am sure it happens, just as I occasionally stumble into some recent S mint mark coins in the US or some or these later brass dollars that weren't meant for circulation.

Thank you for the explanations.
