NZ Post and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand

Hi all,

I recently was forwarded an email from NZ Post, the issuing entity of Reserve Bank collectable coins, announcing their contract has ended and NZ Post will no longer be issuing collectable coins from mid-2026. Personally, I don't like this as even though NZ Post sometimes makes pretty mediocre coins, they are New Zealand's sole commemorative coin distributor, other than the Reserve Bank themselves, who have only made 2 circulating commemorative coins since decimalisation in 1967.

I've never been a fan of the endless conveyor belt of pointless, made-for-collector commemoratives anyway.

In the first 50 years since we got our own coinage, we had just 50 different types.  We're in no way the worst country for pumping out commemoratives (India and Canada, I'm looking at you) but in the following 40 years, we've pumped out 500 different types.  The only reason they're produced is to make money out of people that feel they need to get every single coin produced by a country.

What? Me Worry

Agree totally, all over valued NCLT made by some German mint and often overpriced.

I really think we should make a few more affordable commemoratives and even circulating ones like the Australians do (Not as many, but at least a few every year to grab new collectors and make our country attractive to others).

I mean coins in NZ are a moribund thing in general, no circulation coins since 2020 and even then, they are all made overseas, NZ mint is a private company that makes some of the Tatt for Niue (A NZ colony) and private bullion coins (Silver and gold).

Lets hope someone makes better coins than NZ Post.

It answers the question why when I bought some stamps recently from NZ Post (I still collect them!) and they offered me a 2020 Tokyo Olympics 1 dollar muck metal coin for $6.87 instead of $68.70, after I got to $100. The coin had a mintage of 3,000 but these are ambitious numbers and my coin was numbered 860/3000 and obviously old stock they are trying to rid of.

You can still buy it for $68 on NZ Post, but it gets a 90% discount when you spend $100 on anything else.

I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.
