The Angriest Swapper on Numista?

I got a swap request yesterday that, for several reasons, didn't appeal to me. I have no prior swaps with this member, don't ever remember interacting with him at all. Here's the request:

“Hi John (hope I got the name right?)

If you are ok with this small swap, I would love to get confirmation on:
 Itemized trade value that you will accept, in US$
 Grading – UNC, AU, or XF
 That there is NO toning, blemishes, spots, or damage on these coins
And of course, if you see anything of interest in my swap list 🙂”

Well, my name isn't John, so I figured maybe he confused me with another member, no big deal. Then it was strange that he wanted itemized trade values, because I have current trade values posted for all my coins, but again, no big deal. Then he wanted to confirm the grades and eye appeal for the coins he requested. But I post pictures of all my coins in my swap list, so why ask me for grades? Just look at the photos. Mind you, this is a member with 100 swaps, he knows what he's doing. Anyway, I checked his swap list, it's all common, base metal coins, nothing I want, and nothing I would trade for decent silver coins he requested from me. He clearly didn't check my swap list which states what I'm looking for, but again, no big deal. No harm in asking!

Normally I'd cancel the swap and write a short note saying something like “thanks, maybe next time.” But this time I just canceled the swap and walked away. Didn't say anything. No big deal… or so I thought.

A few hours later I got this message from the swapper:

“Hey dude,

no comments, no response..?

are you chicken? .. or, just plain antisocial human still living in the dark ages??

very pathetic..

best wishes to you!

[name redacted]”

Again, this is a member with 100 trades here on Numista, someone whom I've never traded with, and don’t think I've ever even chatted with.

Blocked and reported him (not that reporting members has any effect).

Has anyone else ever seen such a ridiculous, aggressive swap chat?

No, I think you just esculated the situtation by responding to him. I think that respect goes a long way in life.

please don’t take my responses seriously

Please re-read the thread… The messages I posted are from him to me.

Oh yes. A few. All strangely from the same european country too. Pedantic people that can dish but can't take. Cowards.

Some individuals may find it a bit unacceptable if a request is cancelled without any communication or acknowledgement. In my experience, I have not had any exchanges with anyone here, but I always make sure to reply and decline any offers.

https://paperbanknotes.blogspot.com - Any offer for exchange is most welcome.

So, if a member cancels a swap without comment should I call them “chicken" “antisocial” "very pathetic”? I don't think so.

I have initiated many many swaps where the other member either canceled without comment or just left the swap open for months or years without comment. Not once did I ever send a nasty message to those members.

Hi, I had a swap with you and I think it went very well. In general (and I've done many swaps on Numista) I usually find people kind and respectful, but obviously, sometimes you encounter people whose manners aren't what you'd consider acceptable; there's all sorts everywhere.

In your specific case, in my opinion, when a swap is cancelled, it's always polite to give a brief explanation, but obviously, the lack of one shouldn't lead to such an inappropriate response. We all have bad days sometimes, but we should be as polite as possible when dealing with others.

For the sake of peace I won't name it. My country has its fair share of idiots too as you Spaniards know very well. 🤣 . Makes my previous statement fair now I think. Wasn't trying to generalise anyway or shame a whole country.

That’s a neat find. Identifying those older coins can be a real challenge when the markings are worn down. Have you tried checking the weight and diameter against the catalog yet? Sometimes those small details are the only way to tell the difference between similar mintages.

Why do all your posts sound like a Bot? Are you a Bot?

Probably just poor Bot directions. I'd say read all their other posts but they've been deleted by the Admins.

If those emails were sent by the unamed country Euro swapper, they are completely unacceptable, bad tone and borderline aggressive.

But even I agree that first post about what the swapper wants is way beyond the pale and shows no politeness. Even if T Con did rub him the wrong way the second email from that person is life bannable level.

I agree with T Con (Its strange saying that) that tone in a swap is way unacceptable. If T con was civil to this person, then he should got a civil reply back, not crazy instructions and then abuse.

You got a bad tone mister.

ladies is like a weird creature, you know, they don't never like you

Interesting that this thread has been resurrected by a bot post that has disappeared, especially as the OP is complaining about other member disrespecting him in a message. This has become some what ironic as the OP has often disrespected other members openly on the forum since. Just today the OP tries goading me into an argument on a different thread, then calls me „schizophrenic“ because I politely refused to bite.

Weird and 100% calculated IMO, TCon has become a serial goader and enjoys conflict, it wouldn’t surprise me if that was the intention of this thread, although in this case TCon was on the wrong end of the ridiculous - but who knows the truth of the matter, maybe TCon said something in a PM that isn‘t openly written here and wanted to bring that disagreement out into the forum.

I don't know TCon so I can't speculate in that. We also only know one side of the story of this occasion as well, so it's impossible to take a stance. Just try to be nice to one another and enjoy the collecting. 😊

He's goaded me heavily over Donald Trump as is using his MAGA fandom to start fights. Entreaties to calm down have not worked.

But I have a bad tone according to someone called I show speed, based on an annoying Youtuber.

I believe that the description for the youtuber fan account said ”owned by Mr._investor” or something like that for a while. I don’t want to get drawn into this argument, just want to clarify that they are the same person.

@King knows why King was tagged, King is just embarrassed to say.

Short story:

King doesn't like when I post Numista links in threads where new members ask for help identifying and valuing their coins. King thinks all new members should find that information themselves… King says I'm “enabling” them, but I call it helping. So once in awhile I tag King to show King how easy it is to help a new member.

PS: I also refer to King as King and not "he", because a few weeks ago I referred to another member as “he” and King berated me for midgendering that member because I didn't know that new member's name is typically female in that member's language. Silly me. Watch your pronouns everyone!

PPS: this thread has taken a very weird turn! God bless the Internet.

Yes that tag was 100% calculated, see my reply above.

but who knows the truth of the matter, maybe TCon said something in a PM that isn‘t openly written here and wanted to bring that disagreement out into the forum.

Do you want screenshots from the swap? Do you want the other member's user name? I can post everything here if that satisfies your doubt.

Wow, now we get to the bottom of your anger issues finally. Holding a grudge on an internet forum isn‘t healthy, especially if you want to keep fighting it out on different threads for no reason!

Your short story is very interesting, from my perspective I remember that you might have actually had a different view to a different members view, who wanted the OP to find the information themselves, and I just agreed with the view of the other member and not you. Could be wrong, but that’s how I remember it, and yes I did use the word enabling when conveying my point of view on the subject. Members have different points of view on a topic - that is my view (or my view on that specific thread), i generally take each individual member question on its own merits and decide if giving all the answers will simply spoon feed a lazy person or if the question is worth my time and effort because that member isn‘t a free loader looking for quick and easy answers with no self effort or interest in learning.

As for the gender pronouns, I did point out that assumptions can cause offence, and that that members name was likely female because it was obvious that you hadn’t realised or didn’t know that. There is no need to get upset about someone pointing that out to you, surely you would have been more embarrassed when or if the member told you themselves?

And finally now that you have said goodbye to both me and Moneytane, and became the bigger man for it, don‘t read my reply to you on the New Zealand coin thread, you won’t like it. Sorry…

A very respectable decision, like all personal decisions one makes in life. 😉

I, on the other hand, do swaps not only to expand my collection relatively easily, but also to meet people who share my hobby. I love in-person swaps, being able to talk about numismatics, and meeting people, who may be very different (or perhaps not) from me, but different perspectives enrich us all. I've swapped with some of the people involved here, and in every case, the experience has been positive.

Let's not forget that any of us can be somewhat inflexible under certain circumstances. Sometimes, giving a second chance to reach an understanding can work. 😇

I had resisted giving his name before but there is clearly no decency on Numista anymore so there you go…

PS: I also asked the mods to delete this thread because most of the conversation is off-topic, but I doubt they will. So be it.
