I was going through a dresser of my wife. And found a cigar box of coins and stamps i forgot about. Inside was some coin and stamp stuff. Some US silver eagles some other silver. And some stamps, a stamp stock book from the 1950's. full. But the thing what made me upset was a CD with coin catalogs on it. Put it in my old lap top and open it. There are 18 coin catalogs on it.

Having all these catalog and not using them, what a fool i am. I think Tony or Rick gave it to me.

It is, what it is, or is it.

All day i i have done is look at catalogs. A good day

You are lucky you have a computer that can even read CD's now. I have noticed most modern desktops don't have CD slots any more.

I keep my own collection files (Photos and lists) online, but are an old fashioned collector who loves paper catalogues and coin books. Needless to say they sit by my computer all the time.

It must be fun having all that info at your fingertips though, but something to bear in mind if you have to upgrade a home PC anytime soon.

I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

I think I had that CD a while ago too.  I guess with everything being online, it's a bit redundant.  I still like the old-school paper catalogue, but they're getting harder to find these days.

What? Me Worry

Since I've only had barebone desktops the last decade (at the size of a small lunchbox), I'm used to having external drives, like for example a blu-ray drive that also reads/writes cd's.

Hardcopy catalogues are a collecting field of its own and gaining in price over the years. Also really nice to have when electricity blackouts occur and there is nothing else to do than browsing hardcopies.

Yes there is nothing better than a paper copy.  I pulled out my 25-year-old laptop. Window 8. Will keep it just for them.

Hey Neil good to hear from you. Hope you and family are well.

You can't browse modern https sites on regular unpatched windows 8. Battery is long dead. Hard drive is no match to current ssd performance. CDROMs can degrade over time. Safer option is to move to modern storage medium.

Just spend 20 bucks and by an external CD drive.

A nice find.

Enjoy it.

Yeah, all good.  Looking forward to summer starting.  It's been a rough winter flu season over here this year.

What? Me Worry

Yes, lot of very unwell people in Christchurch, one stage in August some schools were closing due to 90% of students off with flu and only 1 teacher (Reefton). Yet those of us like me who got a flu shot, never got more than 24 hour minor colds. Those 6 covid boosters I have had since 2021 have also ensured I am one of the few who have NEVER caught Covid.

Flu shots work, but are not popular due to our user pays health system - but its like $40 at most and the poor, elderly and most children get the shots free or subsidised. We still have some “cookers” from the Covid era who think that any vaccination is pure evil though.

I say everyone in the Northern Hemisphere - get a flu shot as its likely the flu will be worse this winter.

I get the flu shot and covid shot free, I got it this year too, but still got the flu.  I got type A influenza, which is the one that mutates quickly, so even if you get the flu shot, you're not guaranteed to be covered for it.  I was out for a whole week and still have a lingering cough 2 weeks later.

You're right in one thing, you didn't catch Covid, but you did get it injected. Those shots you got were Covid in a controlled environment, so your antibodies were ready when the real deal came along.

Yes i think the flu going to be bad this year.

mrna works differently

Did your CD have other catalogue on is well @ALLRED1950?  I seem to remember mine had catalogue for other things like antique firearms.

I've been looking for catalogues on antique pocket knives, it's something I'd really like to start collecting at some point.  There are always little lots of them at our local auction house.  I guess it's harder to catalogue because there were so many little companies that produce them, not one big producer like with coins.

What? Me Worry

Based on the list of documents on that CD I can quote some tank dude who asked how person got a hold of military encyclopedia.

No I think I was lucky, I knew a lot of people who got the shots and still caught Covid several times, but it was always the mild Omicron from 2022 onwards, Not original Covid, Alpha or Delta which were the killer ones.

Meanwhile coin books and CDs - both have merits and disadvantages. I suppose with CD's at least they can be updated, a book remains fixed and stuck in the period it was printed, but at least reference books don't change that much for classic coins.

So the best source is internet resources like Numista!
