The image shows two antique coins or medallions.

One depicts "LE SOMMEIL D'ARGUS" (The Sleep of Argus), showing Argus Panoptes, a giant with many eyes, being lulled to sleep by Hermes, with two sphinxes at the base.

The other depicts "CADMUS SARRESTE EN BOETIE" (Cadmus Sarrested in Boeotia), showing Cadmus, the founder of Thebes, with a lion and a figure beside him, possibly Harmonia.

"LIV" appears on both, likely indicating a series or collection number.

The inscription "LIV" may refer to the Roman numeral for 54, but in this context, it likely serves as a catalog or series identifier for these medallions.

The themes depicted are drawn from Greek mythology, with Argus and Cadmus being significant figures in various myths.

These medallions appear to be part of a historical or mythological series, possibly intended for collectors or as educational pieces.

Switzerland, Dassier's 1717 Ovid's Metamorphosos Series Brass Jeton Medal, Scene: Book III, VIII.

By Jean Dassier, plain edge, unsigned as made. The Metamorphosos series was first produced

in 1709-1711 by Jerome Roussel with the help of Jean Dassier. After the death of Roussel,

Dassier re-issued and sold Roussel's series of medals, "Metamorphosos of Ovid" using reworked

dies and added two additional medals. While not a well know or financially successful series it did

gain him some recognition and paved the way for Dassier's next series of medals

"The Kings & Queens Of England. Each Ovid medal illustrates a scene from the first three books of

the Metamorphosos. This is the first time we have had the opportunity to offer any of

Dassier's Ca. 1717 Ovid medals, all of which are rare in brass and bronzed copper.Size: 32mm
