----------------------------
The I Ibero-American Exhibition of Numismatics and Medals took place in the city of Barcelona, Spain, between 25 November and 14 December 1958. To commemorate this, the National Mint and Stamp Factory moved three coining machines to the former Grand Royal Palace of Barcelona, which manufactured the new 5, 25 and 50 Pesetas coins made of copper-nickel with special dies (the first days the 5 Pesetas machine was missing), in full view of the public. On these dies, the six-pointed star (“🟌”, mark of the National Mint and Stamp Factory) on the reverse had been replaced by the capital letters “BA”, symbol of the old Barcelona mint in the times of the House of Austria.

These coins were delivered in a small bag along with the entry ticket. During the course of the Exhibition, approximately 3 000 000 coins with the “BA” mark were minted, of which 42 500 of each value were used to deliver to attendees. The rest were returned to Madrid and destroyed.
Not all those who attended the Exhibition were collectors, so a large part of these pieces ended up being used as currency in some payment. Years later, the rise in the price of these pieces made them searched for and separated from circulation to return to the collecting market, but already used and worn.
