I signed up for an account on Delcampe. When I next signed into it I could not and the directions said to inquire about it , that maybe I hadnt signed into it the last 2 months and they cancel the account as a practice . Not being totally sure I asked to have the account restored. They came back with , I was suspected to be a “Politically exposed Person” or PEP as they put it. I was floored! They send a questionaire about what positions I held all of which were about as far from actuality as you could imagine (A head of an army??Member of a court of auditors ?? Diplomat?? Head of a government?? and other high ranking ) They asked for me to sign the form and send a copy of Drivers License… I guess its intent according to the contact to stop money laundering ( and here i wanted to buy one 2.30 cent USD coin). It all seems kind of scammy to me.

Question , is this legit or normal , or have any other members encountered this?. Or any input on Delcampe?

Thanks Chuck

This is usually only relevant for banks and insurer payouts like life insurance etc., stock exchange and elsewhere where large amounts of money are transferred (Warning signs). They would need to provide me very precisely the laws that force them to ask for that for me to even start considering thinking about giving out my ID (and that would be for domestic institutions and not foreign ones).

If it were me, it would be too great a hassle to bother.

I got the same treatment from Colnect (minus the PEP treatment) after I made several contributions to their site, including this so-called “wiki” article on banknote collecting.  They gave me a different “song & dance” about a security breach I made on their site but that they'd need a copy of my driver's license. That was a huge RED FLAG for me & I just promptly quit the platform faster than you can say “no, I don't think so, Joe.”

Thanks for the heads up Chuck on Del Campe! (Won't be wasting my time on that platform)

Thanks for the input. It did sound iffy to be sure.

I believe my Delcampe account was suspended not long ago when I tried to buy on the site and I managed to re activated the account without providing my Driving license. The suspension was due to my account was inactive for a long time. I seldom buy from that site as every items listed are sold as gold value. I personally will not provide my personal detail to them. Good knows what they will do with those info.

I also have an account with Perth Mint too, and some years ago, they also need to re ID me and asked for my driving license, and I have no issue giving them my details, as I am aware that all banks are doing the same here as they need to re ID all their customers if their accounts were established sometime ago. This is more on anti money laundering measure or to ensure the account holders are real person and their details are captured correctly on their system.

I've had positive experiences with Delcampe, so far 152 purchases.

What was good was I got several notes that weren't for sale anywhere else, which I needed for my collection.

One guy sent me a damaged note, I messaged him and got a refund.

One guy sent a damaged note and he gave me a discount off my next order.

There is one guy who sent me a note with a fold in it, and he hasn't responded to my message. So he will get negative feedback and I won't buy from him again. That's the same as eBay, about the same rate of problem purchases but it is better for difficult to find notes.

I keep a record of “problem sellers” where I have had something go wrong. If they don't fix it, they go on my “No purchase” list. So far I have three sellers on eBay and one seller on Delcampe on that list.

Returning to this topic. The other day I signed in --no problem --no mention of PEP or anything; not sure what happened but I didn't sign anything or submit my DL. Weird. I think who I was talking to was someone thinking I was signing up for Mangopay which I guess is like Paypal. I am not sure though how they got involved in a question about why the account was canceled.

So far the one thing I don't like about it is if you pick a product they say you're responsible for shipping without saying what the shipping cost is so ,I stop right there. Maybe I'm not doing things right?

Disregard my last sentence --I figured it out.

I hope anyone reading this thread will disregard my comments regarding the site.  I incorrectly assumed Delcampe was a collector site much like Colnect (or Numista) requesting personal (& financial) info.

I checked it out after @odd job's comments. I see it is more like another eBay seller's platform.  The only thing that concerns me is the disproportion # of “Zero Euro” listings but eBay also has loads of these & fantasy notes too.

Not sure what a Zero Euro is. I rechecked and the shipping cost thing and there is more figuring than just seeing the shipping charge in USD , I'm just lazy☺️

So in a way this is solved , but telling me I was a Politically Exposed Person  is still a headscratcher. I am notoriously unnoteworthy. 😑
