Hello , I was looking at the Numista pages for the 10 , 50 and 100 francs  from France

N#674

N#681

N#11

And after I saw that they were marked as circulating coinage   I started  wondering - did these coins actually circulate in everyday  life or were they hoarded by the population due to their size an silver content ?

If there are any older French collectors who can answer this question , I would be grateful.

Not an old French collector but looking at the high mintages and the values on the coin page for coins graded as VG I'd say they did see circulation.

I have been told - that certain state pensions in France were paid out in the silver 10 and 50 franc pieces to the late 1970s at least.

So they circulated insofar as they were collected at the Post  Office and carried to the Bank, where then deposited and exchanged for notes.

10&50frs Both circulation & demonetized in 1980.

10frs was 25g

then planned to go for 20frs 30g 1973

finaly changed to 50frs @ 30g. from 1974 as the silver did increased to much.
Face value VS silver content the 10 was a keeper.

did not make sense to return them to the bank. Unless you were on a budget, If you came across one you would keep it.
That’s why most of Them are in really good conditions.
