1927 South Africa 2 ½ Shilling (RARE)

Please see the hairline pictures is well. This coin is rare and many don't get graded high so please check out a different coins grade before telling me as I found what I thought were lower grades then mine in quite high grades ( don't know for sure just my opinion )

Id say XF.

Id say XF.

Hi thanks for your answer. Just politely asking wouldn't that be quite low? Please see some graded examples so you can see because I've seen worse examples get graded AU - UNC and feel like mine would be in between somewhere.

Hello, my friend.

For 20th century coin, which made by full  modern manufacturing  technologies in the era where proof coins  also already been,  such condition is bit far from AU/UNC.

it is just my own opinion, of course.  But something says Me that professional grader of  NGC  would  grade it also as XF.

Im  bit sceptic,  and to say the true  I  have even  bit overgraded it in my vision.  But for 90+% collectors it  would be strong XF .

look at the  empty field. Coin was  quite a lot of time  in pockets with  other coins.

The second secret: coins with bearded  men` portraits are specific, and always  undergoing more critical grades then any other coins.

And, the third secret is that  British  empire silver coins of  19-first half  of 20 c. have  mostly very low   and smooth portrait reliefs.

It is still great coin, an  super collectible condition! Congratulations ! I, myself collect onl;y African coins besides  my main  theme, and I dont have this type in such lovely shape.

I paid about $118 USD for it. Would that be a good price I bought for or did I lose money. Please let me know as I would really be happy if I got it for a good price without getting ripped off.

it is low mintage rare year. Yes, of course 118 is good price.  Congratulations, and happy collecting !

best regards

Hi ,all.

I collect old commonwealth silver.

Australia/UK etc and on king George V coins -obverse ,I concentrate on the crown especially on the beads then on moustache details.

Your coin I would grade ,imo , xf+ to au 53.

That does indeed sound fairly accurate but I feel like it's kind of higher? These coins are graded differently. See this example of a AU53.

Hi .

As posted earlier, do not go for TPG grades.

I own dozens Canada,UK coins -  pcgs/NGC graded , THAT are obviously overgraded.

While back I posted certificate no. Pcgs for a 1844 /5 half crown graded xf45+, which is NOT correctly graded.

Even on USA coins I can show you discrepancy.

Mercury dime all same year 1944 d , I have ms66/67/68. All graded pcgs. IMO ms67 looks better than ms68 with a much better eye appeal.  Believe me I stopped wondering why better looking coin got a lower grade. Maybe  Monday coin.

But it's not just that coin. Most of the same coin I see is graded really high and it looks worse then mine. If mine was graded based on how those were graded then would mine grade AU - UNC ?

2 top world graders were known to be very lenient on world coins grading, decades ago.

Was a common joke,in numismatic circle how off the target they were ,on grades.

I read they much more strict , presently.

What you should do?  All up to you . No one sould  advise you on having coins graded , from photos only. You need hold them in hand.

Best of luck
