Hi all, I’ve been searching for a new addition to my collection and I’ve stumbled upon this interesting coin. The seller doesn’t have much information about it but states it might be from either Germany or Austria, it’s 16mm in diameter and weighs 0.62 grams. I’ve attempted an image search but found nothing alike so I’m asking for your help.

kind regards

Very nice bracteate. An eagle in a crown, the first thought was Silesia, the Silesian Piast bracteates had an eagle in a crown. But it may also be a different attribution, I found, for example, Upper Lusatia.

Thank you!

Would it be considered more of an ornamental piece rather than a coin?

No, this is a coin!

Why do you think that?

I agree on “nice bracteate” and also that the first option is very close.

Here is another possibility (hard to see if the eagle has a crown, but maybe) https://wcn.pl/archive/157514.

Gumowski (1960) #196 is also a Silesia bracteate listed as “adler mit krone” but I cannot find an image.

I’ve been collecting coins for a few years but I’m still not familiar with early medieval coinage. I had suspicions it’s either Silesian/ piast dynasty due to the shape and crown on the eagle. I had also assumed it to be a Jetton or a ornamental token due to it having one side. I have done some research, and from the help of the people in this forum, I’ve gained some knowledge of this.

I am thankful for all your help!
