Collecting large penny of the Crown

There are a lot of coins in the world and most collectors concentrate on topics. Some themes in collections are well developed being others just outlined.

In case of the long lasted one penny of the Great Britain from Victoria's bun penny till the last scandalous issue 1970 there are many different levels of collecting: just by rulers, by types, by years or by details. In any choice there are always some key coins, which make the common collection not complete.

So let collector accept, that the collection is not perfect and there are always ways for improvement.

I think that by rulers just 5 coins  are commonly available, though any the Edward VIII's penny is out of reach for most of people.

By types in most cases we have 2 for queens and George VI and one for the Edward VII and George V.

But if someone cares about more details, it may brings to bun penny has two styles of portrait, as well as the struggle with ghosts on the reverse produced three portraits of George V.

In any case leaving penny of Edward VIII aside (let us ascribe label “pattern” to it) we have from 8 till 12 coins.

By years obviously  we will have gaps in 1933 and less frequent 1954, at least if a fan person is not involved n a government structure, where they should keep an eye on the beauties by their duty.

By details there are a lot of interesting coins and some still wait to be discovered.

For example when someone collects by rulers the collection may be looked like

For  types collector all coins are easy to get apart of less common penny 1949

From one side the lost of India brought to make the title short: now the King is not an Emperor and a completely new type was developed, but from the other side the necessity of penny was small, due to large supply collected in previous years.  As the result the type with short legend, though it was struck during 3 (!) years in practice is definitely less frequent.

And some recent discoveries were discussed at this forum ( see for example https://en.numista.com/forum/topic54112.html).

Love old UK pennies - been collecting them since I was a child and now have most of them back to 1860, although some are not in very good condition.   l'lI add some photos later, but keep the info coming.

Great post !!!

Yes, the theme so much involves, that many people could not stop just on types and collect by years. From this point of view the 1949 plays double role: it is necessary for types for it is the only easy to get of 1949-1952 period and by years.

Just sorted out a pile of farthings and found a 1949 coin, which seems to be quite unusual too.  Maybe that year numerous coins had limited issue?

Though a bit off-topic, but the collecting farthing by types is common. Here is one of a set:

(source https://www.delcampe.net/en_GB/collectables/coins-banknotes/coins-great-britain/collections/o-portraits-of-rulers-great-britain-farthing-1886-1954-set-6-coins-low-start-no-reserve-466098589.html )

and there is always possibility for easy year in any type. Regarding 1949 farthing in the whole emission with short title the local market consider it as a common coin, making the proofs only more interesting issue.

Found these a few weeks ago and thought you may be interested. Completely fake, but still a nice find.  You can actually feel the weight is a tiny bit off - they're a lttle bit too heavy for the amount of wear.  You can also see the remnants of the join on the edge in places if you look carefully.

Can you imagine the trickery these have been used for?   Almost as good as finding Spanish dubloons in the Bahamas.

Looks like the items are not from the mint, exactly as you wrote.

The penny 1949

mentions this topic. As I can understand, it had to be in circulation for almost 20 years. Common condition of coins circulated 20 years do not look like this one, they are worn essentially more.
