Hi all,

I don’t usually dabble in notes but these came as part of an auction lot.
I am trying to work out the years of the two Japanese (Sen?) notes pictured below and more importantly where I need to look to identify the year in future.

Any help would be very much appreciated! Cheers!

The year of the 50 sen is at the right and is Shōwa 18 (1943).

Yes, circled in blue is "10"
circled in red is "8"
makes 18
As another example, in the case of year 23, it would be a "2" and a "10" and a "3" (it would not be 20 and 3 -- because 20 is a two and a trailing ten). The teens are the only place you see a leading "ten" rather than a leading "one". This is a little confusing at first, but you pick it up quickly.

The ten sen note is a "ND" (no date) note, that happens to be issued in 1944 (Showa 19), but is not depicted on the note.
Thanks Both, Very much appreciated! 😀
Again, why can't people rotate the pictures before posting? If you want help, please make an effort to help us help you by:
  • Taking good pictures (not blurry
  • Good lighting (dark pictures are hard to see details)
  • Pictures of both sides
  • Rotate pictures so up is up before posting (this should at least be the bare minium)

Thank you!
My apologies ngdawa.

It was getting late last night when I posted and i didn't even think about it.
I will make sure to add better quality / correctly rotated images in future when requesting help.

Thanks again,
