A friend of mine brought back this coin while she travelled though south and south east Asia. However she doesn't remember what it is and I've been unable to identify it either. Can any one help?

Looks like a Vietnam coin I saw. And so I think the first image should be turned 90 degrees right.
I am still looking ...

You mean it's an amulet?
It's an amulet, and it's not Vietnamese either. It's Chinese, emperor T'ung-chih. But it's not a real "coin," but a token.

Hmm I know she did not make it into China, I guess she could have picked it up outside the country.

The neighbouring states did use/imitate Chinese coins though. SmartOneKg might be familiar with the Japanese use of the 永樂通寶 in Japan long after the Chinese emperor's reign.
It may well be Vietnamese.

Cita: fliegendehollander SmartOneKg might be familiar with the Japanese use of the 永樂通寶 in Japan long after the Chinese emperor's reign. You mean 寛永通寶?
Anyways it could be a Vietnamese but probably a restrike. It looks like a machine-struck modern reproduction.

The 永樂通寶 circulated in Japan until 1608, until it was outlawed in the thirteenth year of Keicho. The reign of that Chinese Emperor was from 1403 to 1424. It was later replaced by the 寬永通寶.
Oda Nobunaga actually used it as his standard.

Oh yeah. Now I remember.
Anyways, getting back to the amulet, it's not a coin. Alright we good? We good.

Was checking to see if it was a historical/valuable temple token. Did not find it.
Also it just hit me that the font is far too modern for that period. It's like finding a German coin written in Helvetica.

Exactly.
Whenever you see clear fonts, it's fake, unless you're looking at machine-struck Kuang-hsu issues from Kwangtung. I always tell that to collectors, and they agree.
Also notice the background surface. It's trying to show an ashy look but when it's moulded it shouldn't look that way.
