Hi,
I have a Uruguay 50 Centesimos banknote (1934) Series I. I am very new to collecting banknotes and my knowledge is only what is on the note in front of me - it goes no further than that. My note has a Serial Number O 1468261 (not sure if the O is actually a zero?). Can anyone enlighten me as to how I categorize this note? Appreciate any help! I am brand new to Numista as well so at the moment trying to work out how to upload a photo too!

Hello,
Welcome to Numista and to Notes collecting!!!
I was busy on last weeks, so I missed seeing your post.
About this banknote, the “O” at start of series is letter, not zero, Issuers made 2 series of notes, idertified as “Ser. I.”, and “Ser. II.”, Ser I also has letter preffix in number, from “A” to “Z”; Ser II, all have prefix “A”.
The list included on page is from catalog form Claudio Rotondaro, Uruguayan collector specialized on notes from his country.
On catalog, he used his own clasification, that uddualli differs from Krause catalogs, usually being more detailed on differences. Some collectors (specially when they dedicate to a specific country, region or lapse time) appreciate to know the differences, to collect them all.
Krause divides only on 3 and 2 signatures, that includes part of Ser I (3 signatures); and the rest of Ser I and all Ser II (all with 2 signatures only. The difference of signatures is owing to a change of Bank's ot Government's resolutions, where the 3 signatures (P# 20a) corresponded to Bank´s President, General Accountant and General Manager; while the 2 signatures (P# 20b) correspond to Bank's President and Government Delegate. Both variants show the positions of all 3 signatures above signatures, as are plate printed; on P# 20b, they show overprinted positions below signatures.
But Rotondaro also adds other variations. ROT R# 8.II.1 includes all 3 signatures notes, matching the P# 20a, but he notes they have overprinted date, below “Ser. I.” and on left side, same height and distance from edge, some are placed horizontally and others vertically. Since position appears randomly in the secuence of numbers, choosed to leave them all as one same variant, or he should have created loads of variants.
Next he classifies 3 more variants, including all the 2 signatures notes. 8.II.2 have overprinted date in vertical position, and also is overprinted President and Gov. Delegate positions below signatures, on 8.II.3, difference comes from notes don't have overprinted dates. Finally on 8.II.4 the difference is the change to “Ser. II.”, and all notes have “A” prefix, without overprinted date.
About the list shown from Rotondaro catalog, it shows the lower and known higher #s, but is very possible all were numbered from 0.000.001 to 0.100.00 for A prefix, 0.100.001 to 0.200.000 for B prefix, and so on; but also is possible defective notes were discarded, without adding reposition notes. (no reposition note known). I have cut the given price values, since they are from local market, and may not be valid for rest of countries. Finally rotondaro shows a list of dates and its position for all known notes, but I understand is of no use here.
Hope information may be useful, or at least interesting.
