Incusa

(en) Incuse coins are created in the same way as traditional coins: two dies strike a planchet, with a hammer or a monetary press. The uniqueness of incuse coins lies in the engraving of the dies. Traditional dies recessed details, so the design elements of the coin are raised, whereas dies for incuse coins need to be in relief to "punch" the designs below the fields of the coin.
