In 2008, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed June 8th as World Oceans Day to promote sustainable behaviors and policies for the planet’s marine resources. Oceans cover about two-thirds of the Earth's surface and are the very foundation of life.

The reverse of the 5-euro coin shows a dolphin diving into the water: the composition reveals the devastating impact of human activity, as waste pollutes the seas and poisons the creatures that inhabit them.

The obverse of the coin features waves of water gently lapping the Three Towers, whose shapes echo the spirals of the Penne, symbolizing the vital importance of water for the ecosystem and for humanity.
