The Great and General Council Hall of the Public Palace houses the impressive mural tempera depicting the apparition of Saint Marinus to his people, created by the painter Emilio Retrosi in 1894.
Saint Marinus holds an open book in his left hand, on which is written the Latin phrase "Relinquo vos liberos ab utroque homine" ("I leave you free from both men: Emperor and Pope"). According to tradition, these are the last words spoken by the Saint and represent the legacy he wished to leave to his people: freedom.
Since 2017, the year when the designs on the national sides of the euro coins were changed, the 50-cent coin features a detail with the figure of the Saint, taken from Retrosi’s famous artwork.
