The Philatelic and Numismatic Office of San Marino issues a collector’s set featuring both commemorative €2 coins in proof version.
The first commemorative coin is dedicated to Leonardo, the Renaissance genius who revolutionized both the visual arts and the history of thought and science. He was involved in architecture and sculpture, and was an engineer, painter, scientist, draftsman, writer, stage designer, anatomist, and inventor. The coin’s obverse depicts the face of the kneeling angel supporting Jesus’ robe, a detail from the artwork “Baptism of Christ,” painted around 1475 by the young apprentice Leonardo alongside the master Andrea Verrocchio.
The second commemorative coin celebrates Filippo Lippi, one of the leading painters of the artistic renewal in 15th-century Florence, known for his stylistic freedom and expressive immediacy. The coin’s obverse shows the Virgin Mary contemplating Jesus, a detail taken from the famous altarpiece “Madonna with Child and Two Angels,” painted around 1460-1465.
