(en) The margraviate of Meissen was on the border of the Holy Roman Empire, in the region of the current Saxony. Founded by Emperor Otto I in 965, its origin was the castle of Meissen built during the reign of his father King Henry the Birdcatcher. After Emperor Henry IV granted the fiefdom to the House of Wettin in 1089, members of the dynasty worked to strengthen this power base. In 1423, the margraviate was absorbed by the electorate of Saxony.
