Resumen

In 1929 ten objects from the collection of Grand Duke Nikolai Mikhailovich were transferred from the drawing section of the Department of West European Art to the Department of Numismatics. This member of the Romanov family made an important contribution to the publication and study of monuments of Russian culture of the 18th and 19th centuries. His work “Russian Portraits of the 18th and 19th Centuries” is a real encyclopedia of Russian personalia. Medallions and medals from the Grand Duke collection also belong to the portrait genre; most of them are quite rare. Their choice reflects the predilections of their owner at the end of the 18th and the first half of the 19th centuries. Among the rarities is the ivory medallion with a portrait of Alexander I by the Swiss carver B. Bodenmüller. The cast-iron medallions of 1816 with portraits of A. L. Naryshkin and A. P. Ozharovsky by L. Posh are distinguished for their highartistic quality. Particularly impressive is the technically exquisite plaque of 1832 with a portrait of A. P. Ermolov. The acquisition of 1929 enriched the fund of Russian and European medals with new precious items, while one more Romanov was added to the list of persons whose collections entered the Department of Numismatics.
