Juan Galea Barjola (Torre de Miguel Sesmero, Badajoz, September 19, 1919 – Madrid, December 21, 2004) was a Spanish painter whose work ranges from abstraction to a distinctive representational expressionism. Although some critics have used the term "tremendista" to describe his work, art historian Joaquín De la Puente argues that this term is inappropriate, since, according to him, Barjola's work does not deliberately seek to frighten. He received numerous awards, including the Medal of Extremadura in 1991, the Eugenio d'Ors Gold Medal in 1963 and the National Prize for Plastic Arts in 1985.
